Larval Assessment Task Force

Mission

Terms of Reference – Revised Spring 2016

Purpose:  Rank streams and lentic areas for sea lamprey control options and evaluate success of lampricide treatments through assessment of residual larvae.

Supporting Great Lakes Fishery Commission Goals and Strategies as Numbered from the Vision Document:

Goal 1:  Suppress sea lamprey populations to target levels.

Strategy 1: Implement lampricide treatment strategies to suppress sea lamprey populations to target levels in each Great Lake.

Strategy 2: Conduct detection and distribution surveys to identify all sources of larval sea lampreys.

Strategy 3: Measure the effectiveness of lampricide application and account for its variation among streams.

Goal 2: Increase the effectiveness and efficiency of sea lamprey control to further reduce sea lamprey populations in each Great Lake.

Strategy 3: Improve existing and develop new rapid assessment methods to determine the distribution and relative abundance of larval sea lamprey populations.

Strategy 4: Implement integrated sea lamprey control strategies for each lake and evaluate their effectiveness.

Task Force Objectives:

  • Rank streams and lentic areas for lampricide control.
  • Refine parameters of models of sea lamprey population biology and habitat, effort and costs, and control effectiveness.
  • Develop annual border-blind schedules that maximize efficiency.
  • Update standard operating protocols (SOP), as required.
  • Develop estimates of costs for the larval assessment program.
  • Assist in the development of research and technical assistance project (TAP) pre-proposals and participate in research studies consistent with the assessment research theme paper.
  • Review research and TAP proposals and prioritize task force research needs that are consistent with the assessment research theme paper.
